Labia reduction

Labia reduction is the most commonly performed procedure regarding female genitalia. A labia reduction procedure involves the surgical removal of excess tissue from the inner or outer labia. Giving birth, personal physiology or the aging process can cause labia to enlarge.

Who can benefit from a labia reduction?

Many patients seeking labia reduction, do so for several reasons. Women who suffer physical discomfort as a result of enlarged labia, or their labia are asymmetrical, have labia reductions for physical and aesthetic improvement. Many patients have very long flaccid labia. that negatively affect how their bodies feel during exercise or intercourse. Also women have labia reductions because they feel unhappy with the anatomical appearance of their labia.

Consultation for labia reduction

As part of the consultation for a labia reduction procedure, we will first discuss your thoughts and wishes, and will provide detailed answers to your questions. Following this, an examination is conducted and photographs are then taken. The photographs are used to give a careful explanation of different aspects of the operation based on previous experience, and also to show you the results you can expect from the procedure.

Labia augmentation

Operative procedure for labia reduction

We use a radio surgical instrument to perform the labia reduction procedure. This ‘laser scalpel’ provides a great degree of precision and allows for a much gentler procedure, when compared to using a standard scalpel. The associated precision enables careful tailoring, which leaves the erogenous zones intact, and also self-dissolving sutures are used to close the treated areas. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and takes between one and half and three hours, depending on the size of the operation. Both inner and outer labia can be reduced in a single operative session.

Post-operative care

Following a labia reduction procedure, it is very important to keep the genital area as clean as possible. In order to reduce the risk of infection, we recommend using antiseptic ointments and soft surgical dressings to cover and protect. From the third day on after the operation, lukewarm showers and baths help the healing process. As the genital are is still very sensitive, sporting activities and sexual intercourse should be avoided for four weeks.
